ELECTIONS 2026
Portland Maine City Council District 5
Find answers about the November 3, 2026 election, the District 5 candidates, and Ilma López’s approach to Portland’s housing costs, property taxes, public safety, and schools.
Why is Ilma López running for City Council?
I’m not a career politician. I’m a mom, small business owner, and Riverton neighbor who is concerned about what’s happening in Portland. I’ve raised a family and built two businesses here. I want to bring that everyday experience to City Hall.

How would Ilma address housing costs and property taxes?
I support more affordable and family-sized housing, thoughtful development near transit, and budgets that recognize the pressure of property taxes. Housing decisions should help people stay in Portland and respect our neighborhoods.

What is Ilma’s approach to public safety and homelessness?
I support treatment and services for people experiencing homelessness, safer streets, and protection of shared public spaces. Compassion and neighborhood safety need to work together.
These concerns are personal. In September 2026, my business, Ugly Duckling in Portland’s West End, was broken into while an employee was inside. The Portland Press Herald reported the incident.

How would Ilma support Portland schools and local businesses?
As a parent of children in Portland Public Schools, I support responsible school funding, before- and after-school child care, and fair state education funding. I want City Hall to work with local businesses and reduce unnecessary barriers to operating here.
